The Mexican Ministry of Energy has issued a regulation to extend the effective date of the ban on 40 and 60 watt incandescent lamps in Mexico, which was originally announced in December 2010, from December 31, 2013 to December 31, 2014. The ban applies to 40 watts or 60 watts of light with a power of less than 17.44 lm/w (lumen/watt) or 14 lm/w (with a modified spectrum of 13.09 lm/w or 14 lm/w). After the delay, consumers can be given more time to transition to compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and other types of lighting that are more expensive than CFLs.
Mexico has banned the sale of general-purpose 100 watt or more incandescent lamps and light bulbs with an energy efficiency of less than 20.69 lm/w (or a modified spectrum of 15.53 lm/w) since December 31, 2011. Similarly, incandescent lamps with an energy efficiency of less than 19.81 lm/w (using a modified light bulb of 14.86 lm/w) of 75 watts or more were banned from December 31, 2012.
Recent regulations also extend the implementation date of the second phase (more stringent) minimum energy efficiency standards for incandescent lamps, halogens and self-ballasted CFLs from December 2014 to January 1, 2019, and the third phase (more stringent) The implementation date of the minimum energy efficiency standard for products is extended from December 2015 to January 1, 2020.
