The Japan Automobile Dealers Association said that the monthly sales of domestic autos have dropped for the eighth consecutive month, and fell to the lowest sales level since May 1968. According to the data, in May 2011, the sales volume of Japan’s top car maker Toyota Motor Corp. in Japan was 48,700 vehicles, down 57% year-on-year; sales of Nissan Automobile were 28,000 vehicles, down 16% year-on-year; sales of Honda Motors declined year-on-year. 35% to 21,300.
"The impact of the major earthquake on Japanese car sales is obvious," said Michiro Saito, general manager of the Japan Automobile Dealers Association. "Perhaps when auto production starts to recover gradually in June, car sales will rebound." 
According to data released by the Japan Automobile Dealers Association, the number of cars sold in Japan in May 2011 fell by 38% year-on-year to 142,200 units. This figure does not include sales of mini vehicles.
