The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Cultural Relics announced the latest progress in the archaeological excavation of the Daxing Sanhezhuang cemetery yesterday. After 7 months of exploration and nearly two and a half months of excavation, archaeologists unearthed 129 ancient tombs from the Eastern Han Dynasty to the Liao and Jin Dynasties. Seventy-five have been cleared out. The cemetery has a long duration, a large span of time, and a number of tombs. As many types of tombs have been preserved and preserved, it is rare in Beijing in recent years.

129 ancient tombs span nearly a thousand years

Up to now, archaeologists have cleared 75 ancient tombs, including 7 tombs of the Eastern Han Dynasty, 2 tombs of the Northern Dynasty, 33 tombs of the Tang Dynasty, and 33 tombs of the Liao Dynasty.

The buried area of the tombs was affected by the flooding of the Yongding River in history. A large amount of silt was deposited on it. At present, the tombs are located at an average depth of 4 meters and a depth of 7 meters. According to historical records, the flooding of the Yongding River was mainly during the period of the Jin and Yuan Dynasties. This was also confirmed through the distribution of strata during excavations, which provided a basis for studying the changes of the geographical environment in the southern part of Beijing.

At present, there are still 54 tombs left without excavations. It is planned that the excavation work will be completed by the end of May and early June, and the protection of cultural relics will be carried out simultaneously.

Tombs of North Korean followers appeared in Beijing

The seven Eastern Han Dynasty tombs were excavated. All of them were small brick tombs. The tombs were made of bricks, and they were also called "brick tombs."

Two North Dynasty tombs were similar to the Eastern Han Dynasty tombs. Prior to this, there was only one case of the Northern Dynasty tomb where there was a clear record of age in Beijing. The excavation of the Northern Dynasties tombs set a rule for the shape of the Northern Dynasty tomb in Beijing.

A tomb carved with inscriptions was unearthed in the tomb, indicating that the owner of the tomb was Han Xiandu, whose ancestral home was in the North Korean county of Lelang County. Lelang County is one of the four counties established on the present Korean Peninsula after the Western Han Dynasty Emperor Wudi pinged Wei’s Korea in 108 BC. Lelang County’s “Gunji” is located in the Korean City, and the North Korean counties are one of its prefectures. North Pyongyang City.

Why Wei's North Korea’s adherents will be buried in Daxing? According to historical records, during the process of reunifying the northern part of the Taiwu Emperor of the Northern Wei Dynasty, there was a population migration movement “relocating the North Koreans to Feiru and resettling the Korean counties”. Feiru is located in this Qinhuangdao City, and the prefecture includes the current Changli, Lulong South, West, and Qian'an counties. North Korea is located in the eastern part of Lulong County and is very close to Beijing.

After these North Korean immigrants entered China, they retained their ancestral home. In the Eastern Wei Dynasty, the capital was set in Luancheng County (now Linyi County, Hebei Province). Beijing Daxing was a necessary place for northern residents to travel south to the capital, Luancheng. Therefore, tombs found in the Eastern Wei Dynasty were also a matter of course.

Tombs Unearthed from Tang Tombs are Uncommon in Beijing

At present, there are 33 tombs in the Tang Dynasty. There are small brick tombs and large tombs. The small brick room tomb is similar to the Eastern Han Dynasty. The “A” shape tomb system inherited the tradition of the local Northern Dynasty tombs. The shape of the tomb is an arc square.

In the late Tang period, there were brick-like wood structure and brick-like furniture decoration in the tomb interior. The imitation wood structure was mainly used for tombs and indoor building arches, columns and other building components. The imitation furniture was mainly tables and chairs, doors and windows, and lights. This makes the original simple tombs have a "created" atmosphere - pre-design, post-construction. This kind of decoration also objectively reflects the changes in the way of life of local residents, and has a profound impact on the layout of furniture furnishings, the production of household appliances, and people's aesthetics. White porcelain and lacquer ware were unearthed in the tomb room, and the discovery of lacquerware was rare in the Beijing area.

Liao tomb unearthed complete mural reproduction of life at that time

In addition, 33 tombs of the Liao Dynasty were excavated, and the tombs were in the form of brick and tombs. The owners of the tombs were all cremated and buried only with ashes, which was closely related to the Liao Dynasty's advocacy for Buddhism.

The discovery of the two mural tombs is the most important discovery in the current excavation work. The frescoes are painted on the walls of the tomb and the background is light yellow. The pattern of home life is drawn with red and black lines. There are tables, chairs, and cabinets. Characters, etc. There are daily necessities on the table. One of the vessels is also filled with pomegranates. It can be said that it is a true reflection of the life of the tombs before their lives.

Because there are relatively few mural tombs unearthed in the Liao Dynasty in Beijing, the excavation of the two mural tombs is particularly important.
