In the middle of last year, the "Global Finance Modern Project Complete Suspension", which was once exclusively reported in the "First Financial Daily", was confirmed last week. High-level executives including Zhang Fangyou, chairman of GAC Group, stated that Guangzhou Automobile's modern project has been completely stranded. At the same time, the "First Financial Daily" also learned last week that Japan's Isuzu Motors will withdraw its Guangzhou Isuzu car project next week.
Guangzhou Automobile fully stranded in modern times
Following the end of last year, Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd. and Toyota Hino Motors Co., Ltd. set up GAC Hino commercial vehicles, GAC Group and Hyundai Motor Co., Ltd. have been completely stranded in the modernization of GAC three years ago.
Last week, the "First Financial Daily" learned from the Huadu District Government in Guangzhou that the project land previously reserved for the Guangzhou Automobile Modern Project had been transferred to other companies. Zhang Fangyou, chairman of GAC Group, made clear in an interview with the media at the opening ceremony of GAC Hino at the end of last year that the Guangzhou Automobile Group’s modern project has been grounded. Due to the reasons of the foreign company (Hyundai Motor Co., Ltd.), this modern GAC project was basically put on hold. .
The cooperation between Hyundai Motor and Guangzhou Automobile Group originated in September 2004. Hyundai took the initiative to find the Denway passenger car under the GAC Group and negotiated with them, and hoped to conduct a full-scale joint venture of commercial vehicles. Afterwards, the two parties signed a memorandum of understanding in June 2005, Guangzhou Automobile Group and Hyundai Motor Co., Ltd. signed the “Guangzhou Modern Commercial Vehicle Project Cooperation Foundation Agreementâ€. At that time, Guangzhou Automobile Group disclosed plans to establish a joint venture before the end of 2005, with a total investment of 1.24 billion. The dollar, which began production in 2007, officially began production. To this end, Hyundai Motor in 2005 completely suspended cooperation with Jianghuai Automobile Co., Ltd., which has been cooperating for many years, and went all out to Guangzhou Modern Project.
At the end of 2005 and early 2006, the site selection of Guangzhou Automobile's modern factory was already over, and the construction of the section of Guangzhou Modern Avenue, which was specially built for the new factory, started in October 2005. The factory with a total investment of US$1.24 billion has already been settled in Baoliang Village, Huadong Township in the area, which is just opposite Dongfeng Nissan Passenger Vehicle Company, another auto plant in Huadu District. Adjacent to the new factory is a large logistics center in Guangzhou City. The modern Guangzhou Baiyun Airport is located about a few kilometers away from the Guangzhou Automobile Modern. Another important reason for Guangzhou Auto's location in Guangzhou Huadu is that it is an important modern logistics hub. As one of the key projects for the development of the automobile industry in Guangzhou, GAC’s modern production of 200,000 commercial vehicles annually is also repeatedly mentioned in the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan†of Guangdong.
However, at the end of 2005, the domestic commercial vehicle market began to decline. In addition, Hyundai Motor’s “helmsman†Zheng Mengjiu was questioned for bribery at the beginning of 2006. Several modern automobile investment projects, including the Guangzhou Modern Project, were suspended. Although at the beginning of 2007, Hyundai Motors stated that it had restarted negotiations with GAC, the overall project schedule had been suspended from June until it was completely stranded. In response, Zhang Fangyou said that due to the large capacity originally planned by the Guangqi Modern Project, it lost a large amount as soon as it was stranded. Therefore, the planning of Guangzhou Automobile Group's 2010 production volume of 230,000 commercial vehicles will certainly change.
In the GAC commercial vehicle layout, in addition to Hino, Hyundai, as well as the Denway passenger car and Guangzhou Isuzu project, Zhang Fang has said that these projects will be integrated in the future.
Isuzu fades out
Hyundai has a huge imagination space
After a wave of waves, the Japanese local media reported last weekend that Isuzu Motors, the largest truck manufacturer in Japan, plans to withdraw its bus joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Group. Currently, Isuzu is still in the final stage of negotiations and plans to sell 49% of the Guangzhou Isuzu Bus Company’s holdings to GAC Group by the end of March.
The divestment of Isuzu vehicles is related to the strategic adjustment of commercial vehicles by GAC Group. According to an insider of the Guangzhou Automobile Group, after GAC Group and Toyota Motor Corporation reorganized Hino Motors, they were about to restructure their passenger car assets, resulting in the exit of the Isuzu Motors that were in conflict with the Hino project, and even the Yangcheng Bus will be reorganized.
Judging from the performance, Isuzu’s intention to withdraw was due to cruel market competition. Because of the fierce price competition in the Chinese market, especially low-cost passenger cars from Chinese domestic and Korean manufacturers almost covered the entire market, Isuzu’s sales of high-end products have been hit hard. Guangzhou Isuzu bus has been difficult to increase sales. Although the annual production capacity is up to 1,000, it only produces 150 to 200 passenger cars a year. Isuzu stated that following the transfer of shares in the joint venture with GAC, Isuzu will focus on cooperation with Qingling Motors.
In March 2000, Guangzhou Isuzu Bus Co., Ltd. was established. GAC Group and Japan Isuzu Motors respectively held 51% and 49% of the total shares. The registered capital was 46.8 million U.S. dollars and occupied an area of 100,000 square meters. Guangzhou Isuzu Bus Co., Ltd. had planned to produce 800 vehicles and 400 chassis with a design capability, and it will develop in the future. According to statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, Guangzhou Isuzu Bus Co., Ltd. actually produces less than 200 buses a year.
The Guangqi Hino Project strictly follows the approval of the National Development and Reform Commission of July 30 last year: 50% of the investment is set up by GAC Group and Hino Company. It reorganized Guangzhou Yangcheng Automobile and Shenyang Shenfei Hino Motors in accordance with the "one project and two bases." The registered capital of this project is 1.5 billion yuan, and the total new investment is about 3.1 billion yuan. The first phase of Conghua base covers an area of 1.06 million square meters and produces Hino's high-grade heavy trucks and tractors. The company plans to form an annual production capacity of 20,000 heavy trucks and 30,000 light trucks, and it is expected to start production in mid-2009; Shenyang Base will acquire Shenyu Hino and introduce Hino's multi-purpose commercial buses, gradually expanding its production capacity to annual production of passenger cars. 4,000 cars and 5,000 chassis.
Hino Motors is a 50.2%-owned commercial vehicle manufacturer. It mainly manufactures trucks and buses. Its current annual sales volume is about 100,000, which occupies the largest market share of commercial vehicles in Japan, and a large number of products are exported overseas, only to China each year. Heavy trucks are exported to 2000 vehicles. Zhang Fangyou said that in the overseas, Hino has a convention for Toyota to commission the processing of models, so does not rule out the possibility of GAC Hino's OEM model for Toyota. Zhang Fang’s statement provided a new imagination for GAC Hino.
