The Land Transport Authority has started a one-year trial of a new taxi information system that can help better match taxi demand and supply. The taxi information system will begin on November 5, involving seven taxi stands at the Harbour Center, Hitachi Building, Jicheng Tower, Lucky Plaza, Ngee Ann City, People's Park and Vivo City. The Land Transport Authority said in a press release that the taxi information system was designed to improve the waiting time, commuting and reduce the number of empty taxi drivers.
The system will use heat-sensing technology to detect passengers in a queue waiting in real time for taxis and provide video recordings through smart cameras. The average passenger waiting time information will also be collected and sent to the taxi call center. Then, the call center will broadcast information to summon the taxi driver. Now, the system is configured to automatically call the taxi company. When there are 15 or more people waiting in line and when the average waiting time for taxis exceeds 15 minutes, the algorithm can be adjusted accordingly. In order to add more convenience, the real-time picture of taxi passengers queuing will be displayed online in Singapore MyTransport website and mobile application.
