The TGX D38 is the latest generation of flagship products introduced by Mann. Mann's engineers have built a high-performance truck that can handle the arduous transportation tasks and have tailored a new drivetrain with a large number of new and efficient features. Its core is the newly developed D38 inline six-cylinder engine with 15.2 L displacement. This engine stands for excellent power transmission and adds 520, 560 and 640 hp class members to the TGX model range.

At the 2014 IAA Hanover International Motor Show, the TGX D38 will be unveiled and sold for the first time. The first truck will be delivered to customers at IAA.

Driveline: The combination of superior power and efficiency

In this flagship product, Mann still puts the total operating cost (TCO) in the first place: MAN TGX D38 does not refresh the horsepower record, but combines performance and efficiency.

The strong torque of the D38 engine perfectly matches the main drive ratio range, whether it is a short axle for a tractor or a long axle for long-distance transport. The two-stage turbocharging system allows the engine to output full torque from 930 rpm. Therefore, the TGX D38 is best suited for efficient driving at low speeds in long-distance transport. The maximum torque of 2500 Nm (520 PS), 2 700 Nm (560 PS) and 3 000 Nm (640 PS heavy load) is fully functional in all gears.

New fuel-saving features

The MAN TGX D38 is also equipped with an efficient GPS-based cruise system "EfficientCruise". The system can identify the uphill or downhill road in front to calculate the most fuel-efficient speed. The driver can make four different levels of settings for the system based on traffic flow, so that fuel consumption during long-distance transport can be reduced by up to 6%.

All TGX D38 models are equipped with the new MAN TipMatic 2 gearbox. The gearbox offers three new gearbox functions: Speed ​​Shifting, EfficientRoll, and Idle Speed ​​Driving, which allows the TGX to remain very efficient at high power: Speed ​​Shifting passes in 10 to Quickly switch between the 12 speeds to reduce the interruption of traction. EfficientRoll will put the gearbox in neutral on a section that is approaching a gentle or slow downhill, replacing the EfficientCruise feature to achieve a fuel-efficient effect. For stop-and-go and roundabout road conditions, the D38 Idle Speed ​​Driving mode utilizes the high torque generated by the engine at low speeds to make the vehicle more fuel efficient at low speeds.

MAN TGX D38 Model Series

The powerful TGX model series is just as versatile as its range of use. The TGX model series offers left and right rudder versions and can be combined with XL, XLX and XXL cabs. For the saddle-type tractors and chassis used in the superstructure, MAN offers customers a wide range of axle configurations. Long-distance truck and tractor customers can choose saddle-type tractors and chassis with 4x2 plate air suspension and 4x2 full air suspension. The 6x2 three-axle car also provides greater allowable gross weight through the front and rear axles. The 6x4 TGX D38 with tandem drive axle provides excellent traction for saddle tractors and traction chassis.

The MAN TGX D38 not only has a reputation as a top model, but also the most efficient solution for long-distance transportation on complex terrains, with a full load capacity of 41 to 44 tons. With a particularly fuel-efficient Direct-Drive transmission, the total vehicle weight can reach 65 tons. In high-horsepower haulage, the MAN TGX D38 with an Overdrive transmission in the same configuration can pull up to 90 tons.

The 8x4/4 four-bridge heavy-duty vehicle with two drive rear axles and converter clutch and OD gearbox is designed for a total weight of 250 tons.

For long-distance transportation with consistently high total weight

The attractiveness of the MAN TGX D38 is not only reflected in the excellent performance when driving, but also reflected in its economy. The vehicle weight limit in Europe is 40 tons; if combined with railway loading, a total vehicle weight of 44 tons can be allowed. Some other countries allow a total vehicle weight of up to 65 tons. For vehicles that often reach this weight, the TGX D38 offers a combination of superior transport performance and cost efficiency. The TGX D38 provides long-lasting power reserve and climbing force for very complex or extremely complex terrain. Thanks to the braking power of up to 500 kW for the continuous braking system, the TGX D38 can also run at very high average speeds on downhill sections. Therefore, it is also possible to maintain a high speed of transportation on very difficult routes. Mann has built the TGX D38 as an ideal vehicle for this demanding long-distance transport and offers the right vehicles.

The TGX D38's compact exhaust gas treatment system saves more space, allowing for a larger tank volume. The size of the muffler is the same as the muffler size of a vehicle equipped with a D26 engine. Customers can choose tanks with capacities up to 1 400 litres to achieve higher mileage.

Torque at Low Speeds: TGX D38 in Heavy Traction Applications

In the traction sector, the TGX D38 is the ideal tool for applications such as construction, wood industry, waste treatment and lifting operations. In heavy-duty traction applications, excellent engine performance enables high-speed, high-speed driving. The TGX D38 offers a choice of normal and medium heights as well as a tight steel bumper.

In construction site transportation (eg dragging flatbed trailers with heavy construction equipment), the TGX D38 can move up to a total weight of 65 tons. Typical applications include dumping saddle semi-trailers or 6x4 dump trucks, often with trailers, and heavy dumpers.

With the Mann engine's unique two-stage supercharger, the TGX D38 can reach its rated torque at 930 rpm. The maximum torque can be used within the range of 930 to 1 350 rpm. Therefore, in traction applications, this top model can get high pulling power at low speed, switch to high gear in advance and maintain high torque under high gear.

640 horsepower peak performance in heavy traffic

The 640-horsepower D38 engine is particularly suitable for heavy-duty transport. The new four axle MAN TGX 41.640 8x4/4 combines the D38 engine with the MAN TipMatic 2 with a standard torque converter clutch. With an ultra-strong torque of 3000 Nm, transportation of 250 tons can also be carried out smoothly and vigorously. The torque converter clutch allows the vehicle to turn agilely on narrow roads, uphill and heavy loads.

The newly developed powerful engine brake Turbo EVB is suitable for heavy-duty applications: it can achieve a sustained braking power of 600 kW in engine braking mode. In combination with the gear side retarder, the total braking power has reached 750 kW.

In introducing the D38 to heavy-duty applications, Mann once again enriched its model range in the field. On the cab side, there is now a wide choice of XL, XLX and XXL cockpits to choose from; there is also a new right-hand drive model. As before, the tandem drive axle assembly also offers leaf springs and air springs. The use of a version with an air spring rear axle as a counterweight trailer is a new application possibility. It is very important for heavy-duty transport operators to replace the Euro 5 specification equipped with a V8 engine with the Euro 6 standard equipped with a D38 engine. This will not change the turning characteristics of the tractor, semi-trailer or trailer. Therefore, the existing transport license is still valid.

Mann's heavy-duty transport vehicle range includes not only 640-horsepower top models. With 560 horsepower and 2700 Nm of performance, the powerful D38 engine allows a total weight of up to 180 tons. For the highest additional loads, adapters for 10x4 tire sizes are also available through Mann.
