[ China Instrument Network Instrument R&D ] The graphene cable project jointly developed by China Hangdian and the University of New South Wales in Australia achieved initial results. At present, the graphene cable samples jointly developed by the two parties are being tested in Australia.

Hangzhou Cable Co., Ltd. is the core enterprise of Zhejiang Fuchunjiang Communication Group Co., Ltd. It was founded in 1958 and is a national high-tech enterprise. It is a professional wire and cable manufacturing enterprise integrating scientific research, design, manufacture and sales. The chairman of Zhejiang Wire and Cable Industry Association, “Hangdian Shares” was successfully listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange on February 17, 2015.
In April 2016, Hangzhou Electric Power Co., Ltd. under the Fuchunjiang Group signed a cooperative R&D agreement with the University of New South Wales, Australia, and Hangzhou Electric Power Co., Ltd. invested RMB 100 million in phases. The two parties jointly conducted research on “Using Graphene to Improve Conductivity of Power Cables”. Hangzhou Electric Graphene Co., Ltd. is a joint venture between Hangzhou Electric Power and the University of New South Wales, Australia. It has set up a joint laboratory in Hangzhou and Sydney to carry out research and development on the use of graphene to improve power transmission efficiency and improve the electrical conductivity of power cables.
The Sydney Joint Lab, which is a joint venture, was put into operation at the University of New South Wales Torch Innovation Park in August 2016, mainly conducting laboratory research on the project. During the G20 Hangzhou Summit, the Hangzhou Electric Graphene Co., Ltd. and the Hangzhou Joint Laboratory, which were jointly operated by the two parties, were put into operation in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, mainly conducting industrialization research of the project.
After two years of research and development, the cooperation between the two sides has achieved initial results. This year, the State Intellectual Property Office of China granted the invention patent for "graphene core electrical conductor and its preparation method" to Professor Sean Lee of Australia New South Innovation Co., Ltd. and Dr. Ge Chen of China Hangzhou Power.
According to Dr. Ge Chen, the graphene cable pilot test line based on the basic patents and phased results of the joint research and development between China and Australia is under construction. It is expected to be put into operation before the end of this year, “further verifying the conductivity of graphene to power cables. Effectively enhance the role and prepare for large-scale industrialization."
In addition, the University of New South Wales has signed a $20 million cooperative R&D agreement with China National Electric Power Co., Ltd., which is expected to increase grid transmission efficiency by 5%. For China, 5% is equivalent to saving 275 trillion. Kilowatt hours help to cope with higher energy demand and lower energy costs.
At present, the graphene cable samples jointly developed by the two parties are being tested in Australia, and an authoritative result will be released soon. At the same time, the focus of the next step of research and development will shift from laboratory samples to industrialization demonstration.
